• Deep cleaning is not required but we ask some simple things of guests at checkout: load and start the dishwasher (even if it's just a few items), leave towels in the bathroom to prevent moisture damage on our brand new LVP floors, no need to strip the bed(s) - simply leave them unmade, collect your trash into the provided indoor bins, and make sure to turn off lights and appliances, and lock the door
ACCESS
• The basement apartment is accessed from the alley parking pad and the entrance is through sliding glass doors, not a street-facing standard exterior door.
• The owners also use the parking pad and have their own entrance to the house from this space.
• There is a door in the kitchen area that connects the Airbnb to the owner's storage area but this door is double locked while guests occupy the basement and neither side can access the other.
• Guests will have access to all pictured areas, including the north side parking space.
• There is one supply closet in the hallway that remains locked.
INTERACTION
• Jenna (your host) is available by text from 10:30am-2am for general questions and recommendations and by phone/text 24/7 for emergencies and urgent issues. She lives on the far east side of town so you're unlikely to meet/see her during your stay.
• The owners live upstairs with their kids and are happy to say hi and chat should your paths cross but are otherwise a busy family and live their own life. If an urgent issue arises that requires in person attention, generally they will the ones to address it since they are so close.
THINGS TO NOTE
• There are no steps inside the apartment but the apartment is narrow so moving furniture inside to accommodate mobility issues is not feasible.
• As part of our commitment to be environmentally conscientious, we do not provide paper towels. Guests are welcomed to purchase their own so you may find a leftover roll when you arrive.
• For guests with allergies or sensitivities, we use lightly fragranced cleaners and air fresheners but have cleaning vinegar to accommodate fragrance and chemical sensitivities and can arrange to have linens washed with fragrance and dye free detergent. Please notify me of your allergies, preferably in your booking message but at least 48 hours in advance, so I can prepare the unit to accommodate your needs
• Early checkin or luggage storage are not available at this property. Please do not loiter at the property if you arrive early as it will raise concerns with neighbors who may report strangers as suspicious. There are several luggage storage services available in DC; let me know if you'd like more information
• No parties, events, "gatherings", or unauthorized visitors are allowed on the premises. If your visit is to celebrate a birthday or any special occasion, please let us know in your message, even if you do not plan to host it at the house.
• For guests with allergies or sensitivities:
We cannot guarantee the house will be appropriate for severe pet allergy sufferers.
The duvets are down-filled and we use fragranced cleaners and mild air fresheners. We have down-alternative bedding and can accommodate fragrance sensitivities with at least 72 hours advance notice.
PLEASE NOTIFY us of your allergies in your booking message to determine if we're able to accommodate your needs
• As a basement apartment, guests will hear overhead noise including footsteps and muffled voices. The owner's son also plays the piano so you may occasionally hear his music filtering through. On Thursday, their housekeepers service the owner's space so there will be additional noice while they vacuum and move things around between 1pm-4pm.
WHERE YOU'LL BE/NEIGHBORHOOD
• WalkScore = 89!
• Straddling Connecticut Avenue south of the National Zoo is a neighborhood of fine early 20th-century row houses, a throwback to the days more than a century ago when developers hoped that this wide avenue that runs northward to the Maryland border would be a boulevard lined with elegant homes. Modern-day Connecticut Avenue north of the small Woodley Park historic district, however, is now mostly filled with high rent, high rise apartment houses — although the city's height limitation restricts them to no more than eight stories, they are considered high-rise by Washington standards.
• To the east, the neighborhood's curved streets overhang Rock Creek Park. On the west, they bend on the slope leading to the heights of Mt. Saint Albans, the site of Washington National Cathedral. The stately rows of meticulously designed houses are preserved intact, presenting streetscapes that have changed little for nearly a century. Though busy Connecticut Avenue is always just around the corner, the residential streets are leafy, green, and serene. The neighborhood provides access to several nature trails, including Rock Creek Park, Tregaron Conservancy, and Klingle Valley Trail.
• The area was named after Woodley House, built by Philip Barton Key (the uncle of Francis Scott Key) in 1801. Woodley has housed many political elites from President Grover Cleveland to World War II Secretary of War Henry Stimson. Nowadays Woodley House serves as the library and administrative building of the Maret School.
• The affluent Woodley Park neighborhood is the gateway to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. The Zoo sits at the southwest corner of Rock Creek Park, a 1750 acre registered Historic Urban Park tracing Rock Creek, a tributary of the Potomac River, and offers miles of multi-use trails, water powered grist mill, horse stables with equestrian trails, picnic areas, playgrounds, nature center, tennis center, and more. Adjoining neighborhoods are Cleveland Park to the north, Mount Pleasant and Adams Morgan to the east, Kalorama to the south, Woodland-Normanstone Terrace to the southwest, and Massachusetts Heights to the west.
• The main strip of Connecticut Avenue offers a plethora of international eateries serving everything from curry to Cajun food and most recently, a locally owned and operated full service grocery store (Capital Grocer whose prices are reportedly comparable to big chains!).
• The nearby historic landmark Omni Shoreham Hotel has appeared in movies, such as The Pelican Brief and No Way Out, hosted every presidential inaugural ball from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Barack Obama, and was a stop for The Beatles during their 1964 tour.
• At the neighborhood's southern boundary lies the William Howard Taft Bridge, the only masonry bridge designed by noted engineer George S. Morison and the largest monolithic concrete bridge of its time. Constructed between 1897 and 1907, it represents the culmination of 19th-century bridge design, exemplifying the transition from utilitarian structures to artistic monuments. The 52-foot-wide bridge features sculpted lions molded of concrete and decorative cast-iron lampposts embellished with eagles. Although the roadway was widened and the walkways diminished in 1936, the overall form and appearance of the bridge have remained the same since its completion over a century ago.
